My best birthday ever!

In 2019, my birthday party was crashed by the Braille Skateboarding crew.

This video was the result. [YouTube link, 15 min]:

People I respect and align with:

Heather McGhee — Author of ‘The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together‘ (2021) – Solid economic research, all kinds of real peoples’ stories, and a framework for the conversations we need to have as a society to move forward with racial equity. Here she is on the Daily Show with Trevor Noah (9 min) talking about the concepts in her book. — https://heathermcghee.com

Vi Hart — A young mathematician, her video on Logarithms (9 min, 2013) has actually made me cry before, no hyperbole. One of her more recent projects involved researching how to represent non-Euclidian spaces in virtual reality. Here’s her published paper from that: three-dimensional hyperbolic space in VR (2017).

Dr. Raven the Science Maven – Raven Baxter has a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and is a science educator who uses music to teach and encourage kids in STEM. Here’s an intro video on her work (3 min, 2022) — https://www.scimaven.com

Fiction books I’ve enjoyed reading recently:

Becky ChambersThe Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (2014) is neither a space-opera, nor a space-war book. It’s an enjoyable sci-fi story with deep character development around the small crew of a long-haul wormhole tunneling ship. While there may be space pirates, this book has only one scene that hinges on violence. It’s quite nice.

Mira Grant — Her zombie series is my favorite of the genre. Unrelated to those though, in her Rolling in the Deep series (2017) she adapted her fresh perspective on zombies to a different myth, merfolk…and it’s a wild ride. [warning: horror-genre, if you don’t like zombies, you won’t like this]

  ░░░

N.K. Jemisin — Her Broken Earth series (2015) is a totally unique dystopian-fantasy and a quality journey. Note, bad stuff does go down, it’s dystopian for sure. However, the world building is epic and the fresh magical ecosystem is a delight to experience. A three-book series with a story that spans thousands of years.

Musicians that move me:

Goopsteppa — my current focus / coding music, sub-low genre…heavy bass. [Spotify link, 3hr playlist]
